When buying vehicles, many people customize them by having the darkest possible window tinting installed. While this may serve a dual purpose by making a vehicle look attractive, keeping the sun’s harmful rays at bay and keeping glass in place in the event of a collision, more and more US states are clamping down on the use of excessively dark tint for a variety of reasons.

Security Risk

Many states’ police departments have stated that when a vehicle has excessively dark windows, it poses a serious security risk to officers – especially when they have to be working at road blocks or check points. One reason for this is that the law enforcement officials are not able to see clearly inside a vehicle when the windows have been darkly tinted. This prevents them from being able to determine how many occupants are in it, or worse, whether any of the occupants are carrying weapons or other illegal items of any sort.

Accident Risk – windows too dark to see out of

Another reason why more and more states are enforcing an array of laws pertaining to the degree of darkness of window film that may be used is that it hampers a driver’s ability to see clearly, especially at night or during wet and overcast weather. This not only puts the driver and the rest of the occupants in their vehicle at risk in the event of a collision; causing a collision as a result of not being able to see clearly can have serious consequences for other vehicle users as well.

When is Darker Tint Permitted?

As fewer and fewer states are permitting the use of darker window film, it has resulted in numerous vehicle owners wanting to know when it is permissible to install it. In some states, vehicle owners who are suffering from medical conditions that are aggravated or worsened by excessive exposure to the sun will be able to install darker tint. However, they will normally be required to obtain a letter from their doctor or primary health care provider to confirm this – which will need to be carried with them at all times.

Always Follow State Regulations

Before installing any vehicle window film, it is imperative that vehicle owners familiarize themselves with the laws of the state that they live in – what may be suitable for one state may not be permitted in another. This will help ensure that no costly mistakes are made when having a vehicle’s windows tinted and that there is no possibility of a vehicle being impounded or cited for not following the law. DMV departments will normally be able to provide vehicle owners with information pertaining to what is permitted in their area.
